The Global Innovation Index 2023 aimed to assess how the global economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the inflation crisis affected the investment and development of new technologies. The report found that despite some mixed results, there was still significant progress in fields such as IT, health and energy, especially in supercomputing, genome sequencing and solar power.

The report used data from the Global Innovation Index database and the country’s economy profile over time, as well as interviews with innovation actors and decision-makers, to provide a comprehensive overview of each economy’s innovation potential. The Netherlands scored high in indicators such as human capital and research, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs.

The Netherlands ranked 7th

The Netherlands is among the world leaders in innovation, according to a new report by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The country ranked seventh in the Global Innovation Index 2023, which measures the innovation performance of 132 economies based on various indicators. The report also praised Eindhoven as a hub for science and technology innovation.

The Netherlands was also among the “high-income” countries that outperformed their peers in terms of innovation. The top ten countries in this group were Switzerland, Sweden, United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, Finland, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Republic of Korea. The report also highlighted some “innovation achievers” from lower-income groups, such as Rwanda, Madagascar and Burundi in the low-income group; Morocco, Tunisia and India in the lower-middle income group; and Brazil, South Africa and China in the higher-middle income group.

The report also noted that 2022 saw a record high in global Research and Development (R&D) expenditure by corporations, reaching almost 1 trillion Swiss francs. This showed that innovation remained a priority for many businesses despite the uncertain economic environment.
