# How to manage categories for your company

Categories help you organize ideas and projects around the topics that matter most to your organization. You can use them to reflect strategic goals, innovation themes, strategic domains, or other focus areas that should be visible across [Accept Mission](https://www.acceptmission.com/es/encyclopedia/accept-mission/).

## Why this feature is needed

Organizations often need a consistent way to group related innovation work. Without categories, ideas and projects can become difficult to compare, filter, and present around shared priorities.

Categories make it easier to structure innovation activity around important business topics. They also support dedicated landing pages, filtering in dashboards, and better visibility in the Innovation Portal.

## What this feature is

Categories are company-level objects used to connect ideas and projects to defined innovation topics. Once categories are created and maintained, they can be used throughout the platform to organize content and help users explore related work.

Each category can include a name, owner, image, and display order. When a category is used, [Accept Mission](https://www.acceptmission.com/es/encyclopedia/accept-mission/) can show a dedicated category page with related ideas, projects, missions, users, and tags.

## How to use this feature

Categories are managed centrally at company level. This ensures the same category structure can be reused across ideas, projects, portal pages, and reporting.

When categories are maintained correctly, users can connect innovation work to the right topics and explore related content through category landing pages.

## Step by step instructions

1. Open **Application Settings**.
2. Go to **Categories**.
3. Review the existing categories for your company.
4. Update the category name where needed.
5. Set or change the category owner.
6. Add or update the category image if your setup uses images.
7. Adjust the category order so the most important topics appear first.
8. Save your changes.
9. Connect categories to relevant ideas and projects so they appear in filtering, dashboards, and portal pages.

## Where categories can be connected

Categories can be connected to the following objects:

- Ideas
- Projects

Once connected, categories help users group and explore related innovation work across the platform.

## Categories in dashboards and reports

On the main [Innovation Dashboard](https://www.acceptmission.com/es/encyclopedia/innovation-dashboard/), categories can be used as a filter. This helps users narrow results to one or more selected topics and review only the innovation activity relevant to those categories.

This is useful when you want to compare performance, progress, or pipeline activity for a specific strategic focus area.

## Categories in the Innovation Portal

In the Innovation Portal, categories can be shown as a section on the home page. When this section is enabled, users can click a category and open its landing page.

The category landing page can show related ideas, projects, missions, users, and tags. This gives users a focused view of activity connected to that topic.

Users can also follow a category page to receive notifications when new items are connected to that category.

## Useful category pages

The following pages are commonly used when working with categories:

- **/home** for the home page where the category block can be shown
- **/categories** for the full list of categories
- **/category/<XYZ>** for an individual category landing page

On the category landing page, users can typically see the category header, owner, ideas, missions, projects, users, and tags connected to that category.

## Configuration and adjustments

Category setup should be reviewed as part of your broader innovation structure. Categories work best when they reflect stable and meaningful company topics such as strategic goals, focus themes, or innovation domains.

When adjusting categories, consider the following:

- Use clear names that users can recognize and apply consistently.
- Assign owners when responsibility for a topic should be visible.
- Keep the order aligned with company priorities.
- Check whether the categories section should be shown or hidden on the Innovation Portal home page.
- Ensure ideas and projects are actually connected to categories, otherwise category pages will remain empty or incomplete.

## Practical example - Innovationlands

Innovationlands uses categories to structure innovation activity across its theme park organization. The [Admin](https://www.acceptmission.com/es/encyclopedia/admin/) team creates categories such as **Guest journey design**, **Operational excellence**, and **Future attractions** to reflect the most important innovation topics across the group.

When a team submits an idea about improving ride wait time communication, the idea is connected to the **Guest journey design** category. After approval, the related project keeps that same category connection so the full journey remains visible around the same topic.

On the Innovation Portal, employees can open the **Guest journey design** category page to see related ideas, projects, missions, and active contributors. Users who follow this page receive notifications when new items are added to the category.

This helps Innovationlands keep innovation work organized around strategic themes and gives both contributors and [Decision](https://www.acceptmission.com/es/encyclopedia/decision/)-makers a clearer view of what is happening in each priority area.
